World Economic Forum has published a list of 10 emerging technologies that can impact people, the planet, prosperity, industry, and equity. It has been publishing the list since 2011, and in its 11th edition, it has published the emerging technologies of 2023 that are set to shape the future of civilizations. Given below is the list of such technologies in summary:
- Flexible Battery
The rising applications of wearable devices and malleable electronics have demanded similar changes in its power supply units, namely batteries. Similar to their flexible host, batteries are also becoming thin and bendable.
2. Generative Artificial Intelligence
An AI is powerful enough to develop new and original content by learning new patterns, through complex algorithms and learning strategies similar to a creative brain. This carries a huge potential as it can be used for different sectors ranging from drug design to spacecraft prototyping.
3. Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Aviation has a huge carbon footprint, hence replacing fossil fuels with a more sustainable fuel source like biomass, CO2, etc. Genetically engineered microorganisms capable of degrading non-edible biomass could lead the way toward the production of aviation fuel
4. Designer Phages
Bioengineered phages capable of destroying antibiotic-resistant microbes are undergoing extensive research. When successful, they will help to improve human, animal, and plant health.
5. Meataverse for Mental Health
Virtual shared spaces are getting revolutionized to improve user experience and improve their mental through interaction with their fellow members.
6. Wearable plant sensors
Similar to their designated purposes in humans, wearable plant sensors will gather real-time data on plant health, which in turn can be analyzed and used to improve the productivity of the plant.
7. Spatial Omics
Extremely high-resolution cellular maps are being developed to visualize previously unknown cellular structures and biological events.
8. Flexible Neuronal Electronics
Brain-machine interfaces have had significant developments to accommodate the rising potential of controlling machines with a simple line of thought.
9. Sustainable computing
Data centers are one of the major electricity consumers. Technological advancements and efficient infrastructure could one day give birth to net-zero-energy data centers.
10. AI-facilitated healthcare
Human errors or errors arising due to human negligence could be skipped with the development of dedicated AI to facilitate patient care and avoid long delays for the patients.
